July 30, 2013

CONTACT: Teri Higgins, Project Manager, 541-682-8462

From Public Information Section, 541-682-5523 or 541-954-2938

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sewer Upgrade Project Will Affect Barger Drive Traffic Starting August 5
Work has begun on a project to upgrade the wastewater system in west Eugene. The project
includes constructing a new, 750-foot-long sewer line in Barger Drive from a pump station on Terry
Street to a pump station on West Irwin Way.
When completed, the new line will provide an emergency bypass for wastewater flows in
the event that the West Irwin pump station experiences a power outage or other serious
mechanical problems. Currently, if the West Irwin pump station is out of service, wastewater could
overflow into a nearby stormwater channel. The new line will reroute wastewater overflows to the
Terry Street pump station.
Because the new bypass line works by gravity flow, the trench to install the pipe is quite
deep – up to 16 feet in some locations. To ensure safety for the traveling public and for construction
workers, the portion of Barger Drive between Terry Street and West Irwin Way likely be closed for
up to two weeks beginning Monday, August 5. If Barger Drive is closed, Lane Transit District will
use alternate bus routes and motorists will be directed to use Royal Avenue or other area streets to
avoid the construction zone.
The work is being done by Delta Construction of Eugene, under contract to the Eugene
Public Works Department. Funding for the $550,000 project is coming from wastewater user fees.
Construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of August.
