July 11, 2013

CONTACT: Lindsay Selser, Transportation Options Coordinator, 541-682-5094
Patrick Cox, Eugene Public Works Project Manager, 541-682-6854

From Public Information Section, 541-682-5523 or 541-954-2938

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sunday Streets Route to be Free of Construction on July 21
At the Eugene Sunday Streets Downtown event on July 21, you may see bicycles, runners, dancers,
and maybe even people on pogo sticks. What you won’t see are bulldozers, excavators and dump trucks.
That’s because the organizers of the event have worked closely with the manager of a major
downtown road repair project to assure that the Sunday Streets route is open and ready for public use.
The route of Sunday Streets includes Eighth Avenue from Almaden to Pearl streets, Pearl Street
from Eighth Avenue to Broadway, Broadway from Pearl to Lincoln streets, Lincoln Street from Broadway
to 10 Avenue, 10 Avenue from Lincoln to Almaden streets, and Almaden from 10 to Eighth avenues
ththth
(see route map).
Downtown road repairs are scheduled this summer on Olive Street from 10 to 11 avenue,
thth
Broadway from Lincoln to Monroe streets, and 10 Avenue from Olive to Jefferson streets.
th
“We were very careful to specify in the construction contract that no work or equipment would be
blocking the Sunday Street route on July 21,” said Patrick Cox, who is managing the street repair project
for the Eugene Public Works Department. ‘We do have a lot of construction going on in the downtown
area, but I’m confident that it won’t affect the Sunday Streets event.”
Featured activities at the Sunday Streets Downtown event include a TrackTown City Center Mile
and Rolf Prima Downtown Criterium that will be happening in the downtown core from 7 to 11:30 a.m.
More information is available at www.racedowntown.com.
Cox anticipates that one lane of Olive Street near 11 Avenue will be closed for repairs on July 21.
th
And several blocks of Broadway between Lincoln and Washington streets will be closed for reconstruction
as well. However, the intersections of Broadway at Lincoln and Lawrence streets will be open so event
goers have easy access between Eighth and 10 avenues in that section of the route.
th
“I hope lots of people come downtown to enjoy a car-free festival on July 21,” said Cox. “And I hope
they come back after the project is finished this fall to appreciate how much better these streets will look
and function when they’ve been reconstructed.”
For more information on Eugene Sunday Streets, go to www.eugenesundaystreets.org.
