July 9, 2013

CONTACT: Brian Davies, Project Manager, 541-505-4703

From Public Information Section, 541-682-5523 or 541-954-2938

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Alder, Hilyard Streets Slated for Repair Work in July
Two major street repair projects in the west University area are scheduled to begin in July.
Sidewalk ramp and storm drainage improvement work on Alder Street from 18 to 24
thth
Avenues is scheduled to begin this week. After completion of the ramps and storm improvements the
contractor, Knife River Corporation, will remove the existing pavement, treat the remaining road bed
in place to make it stronger and construct a new asphalt driving surface, with a concrete intersection
at 19 and Alder.
th
Sections of Alder Street will be closed to through traffic once reconstruction of the street starts
When the paving work is finished, shared lane markings, called sharrows, will be installed to improve
the street’s function as a bicycle boulevard between the University of Oregon campus and the
neighborhoods to the south.
Funding for the $900,000 Alder Street project comes from the voter-approved bond measure
to fix city streets. Stormwater improvements are funded by Eugene’s monthly stormwater user fee.
Repairs to Hilyard Street between Broadway and 13 Avenue also are scheduled to begin July
th
15. The contractor, Wildish Construction, will do a combination of asphalt overlay and excavation and
reconstruction work. Motorists will encounter lane closures and construction-related delays in active
work zones; however, at least one lane will be kept open for northbound traffic. Funding for the
$600,000 project comes from the voter-approved bond measure to fix city streets and a portion of the
development fees collected by the City to support community growth and recoup a portion of the
community’s investment in existing infrastructure.
Both projects are scheduled to be completed in early September.
