July 2, 2013

CONTACT: Patrick Cox, Project Manager, 541-682-6854

From Public Information Section, 541-682-5523 or 541-954-2938

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Road Work Begins to Fix Olive Street, 10 Avenue, Broadway
th
Road construction is scheduled to begin Monday, July 8, on a $1.7 million project to repair
sections of Olive Street, 10 Avenue and Broadway in downtown Eugene.
th
Utilities have been doing extensive repairs and relocations of underground lines in the area
for several months. In June, the City began concrete work on curbs, sidewalks and access ramps as
the first phase of the road repair project.
The project will reconstruct more than two lane miles of badly deteriorated streets,
including Olive Street from10th to 11 avenues, 10 Avenue from Olive to Jefferson streets, and
thth
Broadway from Lincoln to Monroe streets. The work is being done by Eugene Sand & Gravel under
a contract managed by the Eugene Public Works Department.
Because these streets are severely damaged, they will be rebuilt from the ground up, using a
process called reconstruction. Olive Street will be reconstructed as a concrete street to better
handle heavy bus traffic. Broadway and 10 will be reconstructed with an asphalt driving surface.
th
The project calls for nearly 5,500 tons of warm mix asphalt, which requires less energy to produce
and gives off much lower levels of volatile gasses than traditional hot mix asphalt.
The extensive nature of the repair will require full street closures on Broadway. One lane of
10 Avenue will remain open, but delays are likely in active construction zones. On Olive Street, the
th
work will be done in three phases, and during two of the phases northbound traffic will be allowed.
Access to the LTD transit station, Eugene Public Library and other downtown stores and offices in
the project area will be maintained at all times. Plan ahead to find the best routes and avoid delays
by going to www.keepusmoving.info.
The project is scheduled to be completed by late September. Funding for the project comes
from the voter-approved bond measure to fix city streets and the local gas tax.
# # #

Public Works Administration ● City of Eugene ● 101 E.
