June 18, 2013

CONTACT: Jenifer Willer, Project Manager, 541-501-0376
From Public Information Section, 541-682-5523 or 541-954-2938
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Major Repairs on West 18 Avenue Starting Soon
th
A $3 million project to repair 18 Avenue between Washington and Chambers streets is scheduled
th
to get under way this week.
The Eugene Public Works Department awarded the contract to the low bidder, Knife River Corp.
Most of the work will be done by Knife River’s Eugene-based crews and local subcontractors. The
primary sources of funding for the project include Eugene’s voter-approved bond measure to fix streets
and the city’s local gas tax.
The work includes removing the existing concrete surface, stabilizing the subgrade with lime and
cement, and constructing a new concrete roadway. The project will also reconstruct sidewalk access
ramps to meet accessibility standards. Over the past several months, EWEB and other utilities have
been working to repair or move their underground lines prior to road reconstruction.
The initial street work will focus on constructing sidewalk ramp replacements and replacing storm
pipes throughout the project. Beginning in late July, the work will shift to the actual road
reconstruction, which will be done in four phases:
Phase 1: West end of project from the Westmoreland Park Bridge to the west side of the

intersection with Tyler Street.
Phase 2: Tyler Street to east of Jackson Street.

Phase 3: East of Jackson Street to midway between Monroe Street and Madison Street.

Phase 4: Midway between Monroe Street and Madison.

During each phase, 18 Avenue will be fully closed, and through traffic should use 11 Avenue (for
thth
westbound traffic), 13 Avenue (for eastbound traffic), 24 Avenue or 28 Avenue. The repair work is
ththth
slated to be substantially completed by mid- to late September.
The new street will be configured much like the existing street – one lane in each direction, a center
turn lane, and bike lanes on each side. To improve safety for all road users, parking will be removed on
the south side of 18 Avenue from Friendly to Van Buren streets and on the north side from Van Buren
th
to Polk streets. This will allow 11-foot-wide travel lanes, 6-foot-wide bike lanes and wider parking
spaces where they remain.
More information about the project is available at www.eugene-or.gov/pwprojects.
