May 16, 2013

CONTACT: John Bonham, Project Manager, 541-682-5300

From Public Information Section, 541-682-5523 or 541-954-2938

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Fifth Avenue to Be Closed for Repairs Between Jefferson and Washington
Fifth Avenue between Washington and Jefferson streets is scheduled to be closed for
approximately five days beginning Monday, May 20, as work continues on a $3.5 million project to
repair badly deteriorated portions of Fifth Avenue, Blair Boulevard and Van Buren Street in
Eugene’s north downtown and Whiteaker areas.
Repairs to underground utilities are nearing completion, and concrete repairs to sidewalks
and curbs are under way. Beginning Monday, the general contractor, Wildish Construction, will
start the actual street repairs on Fifth between Washington and Jefferson.
The street repair work involves removing the entire roadway and rebuilding it from the
ground up. This requires full closure of the road segments under construction. While the block
between Washington and Jefferson is being repaired, the north-south intersections at Washington
and Jefferson will be closed as well. Motorists and cyclists will be directed to use alternate routes
until asphalt paving has been placed, probably on Friday, May 24, weather permitting.
With more than a mile of streets scheduled for repair under this specific project, one- and
two-block closures are scheduled throughout the summer. Commuters should use alternate routes
to avoid delays and detours. Access to residences and local businesses will be maintained to the
maximum extent possible, and residents are encouraged to shop at local businesses. Lane Transit
District buses will detour around the construction zone. For up-to-date information on current
detours call LTD at 541-687-5555 or visit LTD.org.
When the project is completed later this fall, travel will be greatly improved for motorists,
pedestrians and cyclists. The primary source of funding for the project is the 2008 voter-approved
bond measure to fix streets. Other sources of funding include approximately $180,000 from the
City’s Community Block Grant program and funds from local stormwater and wastewater funds for
underground pipe repairs.
# # #

Public Works Administration ● City of Eugene ● 101 E.
