Request ID: 31945 Request Date: 10/10/20118:40 AM
Service Code: [TFM50] Marking /Striping Maint Problem Call Taker: Nelson, Shade
Service Details:
I want to bring your attention to a widespread hazard to bicyclists that I was suddenly and painfully made aware of this morning. The paint being
used to stripe the roadway is VERY slick, even when only slightly damp. I was riding westbound on Southwood Lane just west of the Coburg /Oakway
Rd intersection. I was on the north side of the road and attempted to cross to the south side of the road so I could access the bike path to continue
south across the Ferry Street bridge. I ride to and from work every day and this is a maneuver I have done every work day for about 4 years. As my
front tire crossed the white painted fog line on the north side of the road, it lost all traction and turned 90 degrees to the direction of travel. Before 1
could react, it slid off the white paint onto the pavement and of course immediately stopped which sent me crashing down to the roadway and out
into the vehicle lane of travel. Fortunately, I always allow plenty of room between me and the approaching cars so they were able to stop before
hitting me or the bicycle. I don't know if you are using a different paint than you used to or not (it does appear to be more highly reflective than I
recall), or if it's just the super thick layer of paint (or multiple layers in many cases), but I hope you will explore alternative ways of marking the
roadways. Such a thick layer of slick material is very dangerous to bicyclists and likely pedestrians also. Mix some sand or other traction material
into the paint, and don't allow it to build up to such a thick layer. The bike will be repaired today with a cost of about $125.00. My injuries were
thankfully minor and I hope be back to normal in a week or two. It could easily have been much worse had the approaching cars not been able to
stop in time. I urge you to consider a solution for these unsafe conditions before more people get injured.
