MATSLER Clara T
From:
Sent:
To:
Cc:
Subject:
Attachments:
Categories:
Clara,
HOLTS Lauri J
Tuesday, July 03, 2012 12:46 PM
MATSLER Clara T
TAYLOR Trevor H
blue green algae hazard reminder for Golden Gardens dog trainers
animalSafetyBrochure _2010WEB.pdf, HABs_dogSafety2010.FINAL.pdf
Follow -up
As you might remember, the main pond at Golden Gardens has been getting blooms of blue -green algae
in the summer months, once the weather turns hot. Some species of blue -green algae can produce toxins,
though it is difficult to tell which species are present and whether the toxins are present. Rather than
testing each blue -green algal bloom when it occurs, we have opted to post signage at Golden Gardens
when the blue -green algae first become noticeable. I just posted signs around the ponds and at most
entry points to the park yesterday.
Although I couldn't find any past emails about this, I was thinking that we had sent out a note to the dog
trainers in 2010 and /or 2011 to let them know about the risks to dogs. I feel like they are probably the
user group that is at highest risk, so feel that sending them an email or letter is important.
I have attached the poster that I placed around the ponds and a brochure — both are produced by the
Oregon Department of Health Services. Please feel free to pass these along. Also the following link has a
lot more educational information about blue -green algae and the risks to people and animals:
https: // public. health. oregon.gov /HealthyEnvironments/ Recreation /HarmfulAlgaeBlooms /Pages /Educationa
ndOutreach.aspx #General
Please let me know if this is enough info for you to put together a memo or if you want me to draft
something.
N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N
La vw(l }Eon' k
Natural Resources Enhancement Coordinator
City of Eugene Parks and Open Space Division
541 - 682 -4925
www.eugene - or.gov
