April 23, 2012

CONTACT:
Jenifer Willer, Project Manager, 541-682-5364

From Public Information Section, 541-682-5523 or 541-954-2938
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Work Starts Wednesday on Repairs to Downtown Intersections
Works starts Wednesday, April 25, on a project to repair seven deteriorated intersections
and other sections of Washington and Jefferson streets in the downtown area.
The $1.8 million project includes rebuilding the intersections on Jefferson and
Washington streets at Eighth Avenue, Broadway, 10th Avenue and 11th Avenue. Additionally,
Jefferson Street will be repaved between First and Eighth avenues, and Washington Street will
be repaved from First to Sixth avenues. New sidewalk access ramps will be constructed at
numerous locations throughout the project area.
The work will begin by reconstructing the 11th Avenue intersections on Jefferson and
Washington streets. Motorists should use alternate routes as traffic will be reduced to one lane
on each street during this work.
Once the work at the 11th Avenue intersections is open to traffic, the contractor will
continue working north towards Eighth Avenue on both Jefferson and Washington streets.
th
Eighth, Broadway and 10 avenues will be closed at times, and north- and south-bound traffic
on Jefferson and Washington streets will be limited to one lane. There are no scheduled
closures on Sixth and Seventh avenues although there may be intermittent nighttime lane
closures adjacent to work zones. No closures are scheduled on the Sixth Avenue on- and off-
ramps to I-105; however, here will be nighttime lane closures on I-105 to shift southbound traffic
into one lane on Jefferson Street. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes to avoid
construction-related delays and detours.
The project is scheduled to take about three months to complete.
Knife River Corporation, with offices in Eugene, was awarded the contract for the repair
project. The major source of funding for this project comes from local fuel taxes and the 2008
voter-approved bond measure to fix city streets. Additional funding is coming from stormwater
and wastewater utility fees.
More information about the project, including weekly road reports, is available at
www.keepusmoving.info.
###

Public Works Administration ● City of Eugene ● 101 E.
