Summary of Temporary Regulations for Hunting Dog and Raptor Training <br />These regulations expire July 25, 2011 or when permanent rule making occurs, whichever occurs <br />first. <br />• No person shall permit dogs to run at large or train dogs in game bird nesting habitat during the months <br />of April, May, June and July, except; <br />• a person may train dogs in game bird nesting habitat during the months of April, May, June, or <br />July provided the training occurs on <br />private lands <br />identified dog training areas that are owned or managed by a government agency <br />• as authorized by the Fish and Wildlife Commission. <br />• Dog Training is not considered wildlife harassment in productive wildlife habitat during April, May, <br />June, or July provided the training occurs on <br />o private lands <br />identified dog training areas that are owned or managed by a government agency <br />• Persons wishing to release domestically reared game birds for the purpose of hunting dog or raptor <br />training shall first obtain a Game Bird Release Permit for Hunting Dog and Raptor Training from the <br />Department. <br />o Game bird species which may be released under a the permit are: common pheasant (all races <br />ofPhasianus colchicus, most commonly known as ring- necked), California (valley) bobwhite, <br />Coturnix quail, Hungarian (gray) chukar, red - legged partridge, and mallard ducks, provided <br />that: <br />■ Such birds were legally acquired and (except for bobwhite and Coturnix quail) are <br />permanently marked by either a nasal scar or by a healed sear produced by either the <br />removal upon hatching of the outer toe of the right foot (for upland game birds) or by <br />the removal of the right rear toe (for mallards). <br />so If the release will occur on identified dog training areas that are owned or managed by a <br />government agency any special use permits required by that agency (i.e. Sauvie Island Wildlife <br />Area Individual Dog Training Permit) must also be obtained. <br />• Domestically reared game birds may be taken (shot or taken by raptors) and possessed during hunting <br />dog or raptor training at any time and in any number, provided that: <br />• The take occurs on <br />• private lands, or <br />• identified dog training areas that are owned or managed by a government agency <br />• The birds taken were released under a valid Game Bird Release Permit for Hunting Dog and <br />Raptor Training <br />o The person taking the game birds first obtains any special use permits required by a <br />government agency (i.e. Sauvie Island Wildlife Area Individual Dog Training Permit). <br />• The person taking the game birds possesses a valid Oregon hunting license and, if 14 years of <br />age or older, an Oregon upland game bird or waterfowl validation(s). <br />• Non -toxic shot is used to take mallards at all places and any game birds on ODFW owned or <br />managed lands or waters where take of domestically reared game birds for training is <br />authorized. <br />
