Blue green algae
(actually a cyanobacteria and not algae at all) sometimes produce toxins that can be
harmful to swimmers and other water users, including dogs.
At this point we don't know if the bloom at Golden Gardens is producing harmful
toxins, however the decision was made to post signage and issue the health alert so the
public can take precautions. The signs will be removed from Golden Gardens Park
when the health advisory is lifted.
In addition to posting signs at all the entrances to the park and at the main boat ramp to
this pond, a sample of the algae was mailed off to a laboratory today to provide us with
more information about whether the blue -green algae bloom presents a health threat.
Please direct general questions about blue -green algae blooms and its risks to one of the
following:
Media contact: Christine Stone, Oregon Public Health, 971 - 673 -1282, desk;
503- 602 -8027, cell; Christine.l.stonc@state.or.us
Technical questions: Jennifer Ketterman, Oregon Public Health, 971 - 673 -0431;
Bonnie Widerburg, Oregon Public Health, 971 - 673 -0976.
These folks are very knowledgeable about blue -green algal blooms and are prepared to
deal with calls from the public.
Should you have questions specific to Golden Gardens, please contact Lauri Holts at
541- 682 -4925.
Neil Bjorklund
POS Planning Manager
