December 19, 2011

CONTACT:
Tom Larsen, Traffic Engineer, 541-682-4959
John Bonham, Project Manager, 541-682-5300

From Public Information Section, 541-682-5523 or 541-954-2938
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New Signal on Broadway at Alder
Adds Safe Crossing for Cyclists, Pedestrians

A new traffic signal will be activated Tuesday, Dec. 20, at the intersection of Alder Street
and Broadway/Franklin Boulevard, providing a safe crossing for cyclists and pedestrians using
the bicycle lanes and sidewalks in the busy intersection.
Last fall, the Eugene Public Works Department completed a $2.3 million project to repair
the pavement and improve cycling and pedestrian facilities on Alder Street from Broadway to
thth
18 Avenue and on 13 Avenue between Alder and Kincaid streets. The final step in that project
was the installation of a new traffic signal at the north end of Alder Street so cyclists and
pedestrians can cross Franklin Boulevard, which carries an average of 31,000 vehicles a day
through that area. This allows cyclists and pedestrians safer access to the wide sidewalks
connecting the campus area to the Courthouse District and the offstreet Ruth Bascom
Riverbank Trail system.
Pedestrians and southbound cyclists can change the signal to stop traffic on
Broadway/Franklin Boulevard by pushing buttons at the crosswalks. Northbound cyclists in the
new bike lane on Alder Street change the signal using automatic loop detectors in the bike lane.
st
The signal includes audible and visual countdown indicators. It is the 241 signalized
intersection in Eugene.
The new signal cost approximately $110,000, which was funded through a state Bicycle
and Pedestrian Program grant. Other recently completed grant-funded project features include a
th
bicycle-only signal phase at the intersection of 18 Avenue and Alder Street and new decorative
th
street lighting along 13 Avenue between Alder and Kincaid streets.
# # #

Public Works Administration ● City of Eugene ● 101 E.
