July 28, 2011

CONTACT:
Doug Singer, Project Manager, 541-682-8460

From Public Information Section, 541-682-5523 or 541-954-2938
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

th
Alternate Routes Recommended as Repairs to 18 Avenue Start Monday
A $1.3 million project to repave an 11-block section of 18tth Avenue between Patterson and
Washington streets begins Monday, August 1. Significant traffic impacts are anticipated.
Knife River Corporation, with local offices in Eugene, has been hired by Eugene Public
Works as the general contractor for the project, which also includes surface repairs to the badly
th
deteriorated intersection of 18 Avenue and Jefferson Street and sidewalk and access ramp repairs
th
at a number of locations along 18 Avenue. Funding for the project comes from the 2008 voter-
approved bond measure to fix city streets.
The company’s schedule calls for sidewalk and access repairs to begin Monday at
Washington Street and move to the east. Excavation and paving work will be done in several
phases. Most of the section between Washington to Willamette streets will be reconstructed, which
means removing the old roadway and rebuilding it from the ground up. One lane of traffic in each
direction will remain open; however, motorists may experience delays, and north-south street
th
crossings on 18 Avenue will be closed at times.
The section between Willamette and Pearl streets can be repaired by grinding off the top
layer of deteriorated asphalt and constructing a new asphalt surface. This work goes much quicker
than reconstruction; however, a one-night closure will be required to complete top-lift paving.
th
The sections of 18 Avenue between Pearl and Patterson streets also will be reconstructed.
th
This will require closing the section of 18Avenue between Patterson and High streets for
approximately three weeks and the section between High and Pearl streets for about one week.
These closures are tentatively scheduled to begin in late August.
th
The intersection of 18 Avenue and Jefferson Street will be closed for less than a day while
that repair work is being done.
th
Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes such as 19 Avenue to avoid detours and
delays. Updated project information will be posted at www.keepusmoving.info.
# # #

Public Works Administration ● City of Eugene ● 101 E.
