News Release: Street Work Starts Monday in West University Area
June 23, 2011
Page 2

th
Back-in diagonal parking will be installed on the south side of 13 Avenue between Alder
and Kincaid streets. Back-in diagonal parking increases the number of available parking spaces
within a set area and it allows vehicles to be loaded and unloaded from the sidewalk. It also
increases safety because drivers can see oncoming traffic (including bicycles and pedestrians)
when they are pulling out of their space. It reduces the chances of bicyclists getting “doored,”
and when vehicle doors are open they shield children who are entering or exiting the car from
running out into the travel lane.
Enhancing the tree canopy in the west university area is an important project goal.
Twenty-one trees will be replanted in the project area, including new trees on 13th Avenue
between Alder and Kincaid.
The primary source of funding for the project is the 2008 voter-approved bond measure
to fix city streets. The funding mix also includes local gas tax funds and a $707,000 state bicycle
and pedestrian program grant.
Wildish Construction is the general contractor for the project, which is designed and
managed by the Eugene Public Works Department.
Additional information about the project and up-to-date road reports for this and other
local projects are available at www.keepusmoving.info.
# # #

Public Works Administration ● City of Eugene ● 101 E.
