Leaf Story News Release
November 4, 2010
Page 2

If you have more leaves than you can use on your property or dispose of in your yard
debris container, Eugene provides a leaf collection service. The first round of collections begins
November 8 in west and central Eugene. Crews work their way around the city during November
and December, then make a second round of collections starting in late December. If you’re
planning to put leaves out for collection, please following these important guidelines:
Find a safe place to pile and cover leaves on your property until the weekend before leaf
pickup is scheduled in your neighborhood. This will keep them from blowing around or washing
into storm drains.
When piling leaves in the street, don’t place leaves in bike lanes. Leaves piled in bike
lanes can force cyclists to swerve into traffic lanes or lose control of their bicycles. Remember,
property owners are responsible and bear the liability for leaves that are placed improperly in the
street or cause safety or flooding hazards.
If there are safe places to pile leaves, make sure there’s at least 15 feet between leaf piles
and parked cars so Public Works equipment operators can safely remove the leaves.
Keep sidewalks clear of leaves and other seasonal debris that can cause slipping or
tripping hazards.
Still not sure what to do with all those leaves? Visit the City of Eugene’s leaf web site at
www.eugene-or.gov/leaf. You’ll find the most current leaf collection schedule, links to online
services such as leaf delivery request forms and requests to clean bike lanes, and tips on
composting leaves. Or call Public Works Maintenance at 541-682-4800.
# # #

Public Works Administration ● City of Eugene ● 101 E.
