Type of Left Turn Phasing to be Used
If one or more warrant for left turn signalization is met, a decision needs to be made whether to install
protected -only, protected - permissive or permissive- protected phasing.
Protected -only phasing should be installed at locations which meet any of the following conditions:
Condition
85th percentile speed or posted speed is greater than 45 mph.
Three left turn accidents per year or five in two years. Include left
turn accidents involving pedestrians.
Three or more lanes of opposing traffic.
Dual left turn lanes.
U -turns are permitted.
Sight distance to opposing traffic is less than 250' when the 85th
percentile speed is below 35 mph, or less than 400' when the 85th
percentile speed is over 35 mph or higher.
The intersection has an unusual geometric configuration, or when a
significant portion of the pedestrians or drivers using the intersection
are children, elderly, or disabled, or when an engineering
investigation indicates a need for protected -only phasing.
Protected - permissive phasing may be considered at locations which satisfy warrants for left turn
phasing, but don't meet protected -only warrants.
Permissive- protected phasing may be used at locations which meet any of the following conditions
Condition Condition Met?
At a "T" intersection with no opposing left turn.
If the opposing left turn is a prohibited movement.
If needed for progression or operational concerns.
Condition Met?
LT -WARR FRM
