September 2, 2010

CONTACT:
Scott Milovich, Project Manager, 541-682-6036

From Public Information Section, 541-682-5523 or 541-954-2938
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Goodpasture Island Road Set to Reopen on Saturday
After being closed for almost two months, Goodpasture Island Road is scheduled to reopen
to through traffic on Saturday morning, September 4.
The road was closed just north of Valley River Center on July 6 to install a major culvert
crossing in the Delta Ponds area. The culvert constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and
the City of Eugene completes a hydrologic connection between the Willamette River and ponds to
the west of Goodpasture Island Road and the ponds east of the road. Combined with other work the
City is completing in the Delta Ponds, this culvert will allow fish passage and create off-channel
habitat for migrating Chinook salmon and contribute to improved water quality in the Delta Ponds.
The primary source of funding for the $1.2 million culvert crossing project comes from federal
stimulus funds allocated to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Doyon Project Services, Inc., of
Federal Way, Washington, is the general contractor on the project.
Although the major portion of the culvert project has been completed, motorists should
expect lane detours and brief delays for the next several weeks as the contractor takes care of final
details and cleanup.
The culvert crossing is one of several major projects that occurred on Goodpasture Island
Road this summer:

In July and August the City repaved Goodpasture Island Road from Delta Highway to
Kingsley as well as the southern portion of the road and Valley River Drive. That work is completed.

Meanwhile, the finishing touches are being put on the new Delta Ponds Bridge. A preview
and dedication event to celebrate the substantial completion of the bridge is scheduled at 11 a.m. on
Saturday, September 11. The bridge will be open for the dedication event but is likely to remain
closed for at least another month as the contractor installs railings and electrical fixtures.

Work also continues on restoring banks and habitat in the Delta Ponds area. That work is
scheduled to run until late October. However, other than heavy truck traffic no traffic impacts are
anticipated.
For up-to-day road work reports, go to www.eugene-or.gov/traffic or call 541-984-8484.
# # #

Public Works Administration ● City of Eugene ● 101 E.
