July 16, 2010

CONTACT:
Doug Singer, Project Manager, 541-682-8460

From Public Information Section, 541-682-5523 or 541-954-2938
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

th
Major Road Repairs Will Slow Traffic on West 18 Avenue (Chambers - City View)
th
A $1.5 million project to repair an eight-block section of West 18 Avenue will hit full
stride in the coming week.
Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes to avoid construction delays on West
th
18 Avenue between City View Street and the Westmoreland bike bridge east of Chambers
Street.
Crews have been working in that area for the past several weeks, moving utilities and
preparing the roadway for major repairs. On Monday, July 19, Knife River Corporation, working
under contract to the Eugene Public Works Department, will begin replacing curbs and gutters,
then start reconstructing portions of the deteriorated roadway and repaving the entire section
from curb to curb. The project is scheduled to be substantially completed by mid-September.
th
Plans call for one lane of traffic to remain open in each direction on 18 Avenue during
construction; however, the extensive nature of the repair work likely will result in delays during
daytime work hours.
Bicyclists planning alternate routes should be aware that the section of the Fern Ridge
Path from Polk to Chambers streets is also under construction.
th
The primary source of funding for the repairs on West 18 Avenue is the voter-approved
bond measure to fix Eugene’s streets. Bond measure funds also are paying for the repairs to
the bike path.
A number of other road repair projects are under way in Eugene. Motorists are advised
to plan ahead to avoid delays and pay attention to signs and flaggers directing traffic in work
zones. For up-to-date information about local road repairs, go to www.eugene-or.gov/traffic or
call the road relief hotline at 541-954-2938.
# # #

Public Works Administration ● City of Eugene ● 101 E.
