Materials and Construction techniques:
A complete set of working drawings and engineering specifications will be completed,
delivered and approved prior to beginning fabrication of the sculptural components. The
sculpture will be constructed from both tapered and straight steel posts with a maximum
height of 30' as per engineered specifications. These posts will be painted with low
maintenance epoxy paint with sufficient durability suitable for outdoor metalwork, also
as per city/engineering specifications. If necessary the posts could also be hot galvanized
for added protection from corrosion. Each vertical pole will be equipped with a collar at
an appropriate height that will prevent climbing and vandalism. Likewise, the poles will
be located at distances far enough apart as to preclude climbing them together.
The net will be constructed of 5/16" stainless aircraft cable with swaged ends and
stainless compression connectors. The support cables that tension the net form will be
1/2" stainless aircraft cable with swaged ends. All additional hardware, connectors and
fasteners will be made of stainless, leaving the entire sculpture virtually maintenance
free.
Environmental practices
The Lee Imonen Sculpture Studio practice is to seek out and utilize whenever appropriate
salvaged, remnant and second use materials. Each of my public works has included a
major component that was sourced in this way. Likewise, the studio utilizes extensive
recycting and thoughtful planning practices in order to minimize waste and maintain the
circle of use.
Delivery and Installation
I anticipate no difficulties in meeting the August 1, 2010 deadline for installation. I have
included in my pricing delivery to the site as well as installation of the sculpture. If the
owner would prefer to have a separate contractor install the work, I will provide whatever
support consulting necessary to make that happen smoothly. Likewise, I will make
myself available on site during the installation period to facilitate and answer any
outstanding questions.
I hope that this explanation of the design, intent and construction methods provides a
clear picture of the relevance and appropriateness of Bountiful for the newly restored
Delta Ponds wildlife area. As an artist who works on public work, I have developed a
practice of trying to understand a particular place, its history, function and inhabitants.
The result, I hope is a strong concept for a sculpture that was conceived of, inspired by
and designed specifically for this site and its needs.
Feel free to contact me with any further questions.
Thank you,
Lee C. Imonen
