Public Works
Maintenance
February 23, 2000
Chri.sti~-;e Andersen
Public Works Director
City of Eugene
858 Pearl Street
Eugene OR 97401
Dear Christine Andersen,
City of Eugene
1820 Roosevelt Boulevard
Eugene, Oregon 97402
(541)682-4800
The Hendricks Park Departmental Advisory Committee has been working for almost two years to
create a management plan for the forested area of Eugene's oldest park. During this process, we have
held numerous meetings, two open houses, and consulted with staff and the various scientific experts
on the consultant team. The result of all of this work is a scientifically based management plan that
should serve not only for Hendricks Park but also as a model for plans for Eugene's other natural
forests and open spaces.
All committee members have worked diligently with the consultant team, staff of Public Works, and
many public participants. We have discussed and argued with them and among ourselves to sort out
and settle difficult and controversial issues. We hope that the work of all those involved has been
comprehensive and thorough. We, the Departmental Advisory Committee, support the plan and its
recommendations.
We ask you, please, to adopt the Hendricks Park Forested Area Management Plan, as prepared by
David Reed & Associates. Furthermore, should you present this plan to the City Council, would you
kindly invite us to attend the City Council meeting when you do?
Finally, we hope that adoption of the plan will be followed by the necessary funding for its
implementation. Be assured that we, and the public at large, are looking beyond planning itself to the
enduring challenge of its implementation and, so, to richly interesting, safe, and beautiful natural
forests and open spaces of our city.
.Yours sincerely,
Stanton A. Cook
on behalf of the Committee
