RIVER ROAD RESIDENTS' VIEWS OF ANNEXATION
Attitudes Towards Annexation
At the outset of the interview before any discussion of issues, respondents
were asked (1) how they would vote on annexation "if the election were held
today," and (2) how firmly those intentions were held.
Nearly two out of three opposed annexation, with a majority heavily opposed
to a union .with the City.
Vote on Annexation (Read Down)
Strongly for annexation 12%
Somewhat for 13
Somewhat against annexation 13
Strongly against 52
Undecided 9
(Results do not total 100% due to rounding)
Attitudes are clearly crystallized, with 52% strongly opposed and only rune
percent "undecided." While some attitudes are susceptible to change, the task
is obviously one of pointing out the basic benefits of annexation rather than
merely explaining the issues involved.
Population Patterns
Now, to clarify the voting picture, the table on the following page segments
attitudes by demographic groups. In addition to the "for" and "against"
categories, results are reported in terms of mean averages, based on a
weighted four point scale. The higher the mean, the stronger the support for
annexation.
PAGE 2
