The house is two
rooms deep, one story and has a small front-gable entry porch, which was typical for these homes built after
the 1930s. The house is wood-frame and constructed on a concrete foundation. Its original rectangular plan
has been altered by an addition on part of the reaz elevation. However, the date of this addition is unknown
as it does not appeaz on any Sanborn maps. The side-gabled roof is covered with composition shingles and
the addition, which has a shed roof, is covered with rolled roofing. The exterior walls are clad with
clapboard. The front door and some of the one-over-one double hung sash windows are original but there are
also large aluminum sliding windows, which aze framed with plastic shutters. This house is one just a few
single family dwellings that remain on this portion of W. D Street. Multi-family buildings occupy the
majority of this block.
Historical Significance:
This house was built at the begixuung of a period population growth in Springfield, in which there was a 184
percent increase in Springfield's population from 1940 to 1950. During this same period, the average growth
rate for the county was 82.9 percent. This modest house was built during the early part of this decade in
1941. Since this house was built, it has had several occupants. Records indicate that it was first owned by
William Cole and then subsequently by Charles and Lola Yeager beginning in 1944. Mrs. A. Heaton is listed
as the occupant in 1953. There are no further records for any of the house's residents. Based on the research,
it does not appeaz that this house is associated with any significant events or people, nor does it possess
architectural significance. HRA recommends that 137 W. D Street be determined not eligible for listing in
the National Register of Historic Places.
References:
Eugene Springfield City Directory
1953, 1956 Eugene Springfield City Directory.
