Oregon Inventory of Historic Properties
Historic Resource Survey Form
Pane 2
County: Lane
Statement of Significance (Use additional sheets if necessary)
Narrative Physical Description:
This house is a version of the gable-front-and-wing house inspired by the minimal traditional style of the
1940s. It is a one-and-a-half story house with a front and side gable, and a later shed addition on the rear
fagade. This addition does not appear on the 1970 Sanborn Map, indicating that it was probably built more
recently. The house is wood-frame and constructed on a concrete foundation. The gable roofs are covered
with composition shingles, and the addition's roof is covered in rolled roofing. The house's exterior walls
are clad in the original clapboard, which has recently been painted. The windows are paired horizontal four
pane windows. This house is one just a few single family dwellings that remain on this portion of West D
Street. Multi-family buildings occupy the majority of this block.
Historical Significance:
This house was built toward the end of a population boom in Springfield, in which there was a 184 percent
increase in Springfield's population from 1940 to 1950. During this same period, the average growth rate for
the county was 82.9 percent. The earliest available record for 25 W. D Street indicates that S.W. Barrett
resided in this house in 1953. In 1956, Robert M. Blair and Yvonne Blair were residents here. Robert Blair
was a shingle weaver at Huntington Brothers. There was no information that provided a record of ownership
for this property..,Based on the research, it does not appear that this house is associated with any historical
events or people, nor does it possess any axchitectural significance. HRA recommends that 25 W. D Street be
determined not eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
References:
Eugene Springfield City Directory
1953, 1956 Eugene Springfield City Directory.
