Oregon Inventory of Historic Properties
Historic Resource Survey Form
Pane 2
County: Lane
Statement of Signficance (Use additional sheets if necessary)
Physical Narrative Description:
This building is a one-story wood-frame duplex, which retains many of its original features. Each unit has a
side-gabled roof covered with composition .shingles. Each unit has a gabled over-door with decorative
scrolled brackets and vertical scalloped boards. The exterior walls are clad with asbestos siding and the gable
trims are covered with vertical boards. The fenestration is coupled and ribbon form with fixed horizontal
multi-pane windows. Some of the original panes are broken and have not been replaced.
Historical Significance:
This house was built in the middle of a population boom in Springfield, in which there was a 184 percent
increase in Springfield's population from 1940 to 1950. During this same period, the average growth rate for
the county was 82.9 percent. Records indicate that the land on which this house is situated was granted to
Elizabeth Katherina Ellison in 1941. She was granted an undivided half interest of the entire block by her
husband J.F. Ellison. She was the first owner of this duplex when it was built in 1945. No biographical
information on J.F. or Elizabeth Ellison was found. Fred and Dorothy B. Hollister were subsequent owners
from 1948 to 1952. The Eugene Springfield City Directory records Fred Hollister's occupation as a
contractor. Based on the research, it does not appear that this house is associated with significant historical
events or people, nor does it possess architectural significance. HRA recommends that 454 North Mill
Street/121 W. D Street be determined not eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
References:
Lane County
n.d.
