Oregon Inventory of Historic Properties
Historic Resource Survey Form
Pane 2
County: Lane
Statement of Signficance (Use additional sheets ff necessary)
Narrative Physical Description:
This one-story post-war bungalow is a simple side-gabled, hall-and-parlor house. It is one-room deep and
two rooms wide. It is wood-frame, constructed on a concrete foundation, and the side-gabled roof extends
over the front door to provide a covered entry. The exterior walls are clad with milled cedar siding and the
entire roof volume is covered with composition shingles. The house has aluminum sliding windows.
Historical Significance:
This house was built in the middle of a population boom in Springfield, in which there was a 184 percent
increase in Springfield's population from 1940 to 1950. During this same period, the average growth rate for
the county was 82.9 percent. Like many infill houses in this neighborhood, this dwelling was built between
two homes that were constructed in 1920. Records show that Elizabeth Katherina Ellison was the first
owner of this house, which was built in 1946. The house was sold jointly to Henry and Mary ten Napel, and
L.G. and Lenora Gause in 1961. Henry ten Napel was the owner of Dutchy's Construction and Contracting
and L.G. Gause was a foreman at the company. There are no further records on the ownership or residents of
this house. Based on the research, it does not appear that this house is associated with significant.historical
events or people, nor does it possess architectural significance. HRA recommends that 119 W. D Street be
determined not eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
References:
Eugene Springfield City Directory
1958 Eugene Springfield City Directory.
