Oregon Inventory of Historic Properties
Historic Resource Survey Form
Paae 2
County: Lane
Statement of Signficance (Use additional sheets if necessary)
Narrative Physical Description:
This cottage is a simple side-gabled dwelling with a front porch, which has an extended roof. The house is
wood-frame, one-story and constructed on a concrete foundation. The original rectangular plan has been
modified by two additions, which create an ell plan. The original roof is covered with composition shingles,
while the roof on the additions is covered with rolled roofing. The exterior walls are clad with milled cedar
siding. The fenestration is aluminum sliding windows.
Statement of Significance:
This house was built at the beginning of a period of population growth in Springfield, in which there was a
184 percent increase in Springfield's population from 1940 to 1950. During this same period, the average
growth rate for the county was 82.9 percent. Records indicate that the land on which this house is situated
was granted to Elizabeth Katherina Ellison in 1941. She was granted an undivided half interest of the entire
block by her husband J.F. Ellison. No biographical information on J.F. or Elizabeth Ellison was found. The
records about this house are scant but the Eugene Springfield Directory shows that Andrew and Alyce
Johnson lived in this house in 1952 and that he was a local carpenter. The directory revealed that Everette
Spears and Grace Spears also lived in this house during the same year, and that he was a welder for Roseburg
Lumber Company. Based on the research, it does not appear that this house is associated with significant
historical events or people, nor does it possess architectural significance. HRA recommends that 243 W. D
Street be determined not eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
References:
Eugene Springfield City Directory
1952 =1953 Eugene Springfield City Directory.
