Oregon Inventory of Historic Properties
Historic Resource Survey Form
Paae 2
County: Lane
Statement of Significance (Use additional sheets if necessary)
Narrative Physical Description:
This one-story bungalow is wood-frame, constructed on a concrete foundation. The house's exterior walls
have been re-clad with vinyl siding and the majority of the windows are replacement fixed plate glass
windows. The entire volume of the hipped roof is covered with composition shingles. The roof extends over
the recessed front entrance to create a covered entry.
Historical Significance:
This house was built at the beginning of a period of population growth in Springfield, in which there was a
184 percent increase in Springfield's population from 1940 to 1950. During this same period, the average
growth rate for the county was 82.9 percent. Records indicate that Elmer J. Harris and Myrtle E. Harris were
the first owners of this house when it was built in 1941. At the time, they also owned 243 and 253 W. D
both of which are located on the same block as this house. No biographical information on Elmer or
Street
,
Myrtle Harris was found. Records show that James and Dorothy Fleck were the subsequent owners of this
house. The Eugene Springfield Directory reveal that James Fleck was a computer draftsman for the City of
Springfield in 1952, a Street Superintendent in 1955, and an engineer with Wildish Construction and
Contracting in 1956. The house was sold to Eveline S. Fleck in 1962: Based on the research, it does not
appear that this house is associated with signif cant historical events or people, nor does ~it retain integrity of
its original materials. HRA recommends that 444 Water Street be determined not eligible for listing in the
National Register of Historic Places.
References:
Eugene Springfield City Directory
1952, 1955,1956 Eugene Springfield City Directory.
