A total of 29
properties were identified within the APE that aze at least 50 years old. Three of these historical
resources aze commercial buildings, and 26 of the properties aze houses of which there are 24
single family dwellings and two duplexes.
Most of the houses that were inventoried generally date either from the 1920s or the 1940s.
Many homes in the Riverfront APE were built in the decade between 1940 and 1950 when
Springfield was experiencing a population boom. Springfield had a 184 percent increase in
population during this period when the average growth rate for the county was 82.9 percent.
Generally, the homes built in this neighborhood during this ten-year period were modest infill
dwellings. The three commercial buildings that were inventoried have been altered from their
original form and aze not associated with historical events or people.
$ased on the fieldwork and research, HRA recommends that two properties be determined
eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. These properties aze 111 W. C
Street and 214 Pioneer Pazkway. The former is a small 1923 Craftsman style house situated on
the southeast corner of West C Street and North Mill Street. Some of the chazacteristics of the
Craftsman style represented in this house include aloes-pitched gable roof with wide
overhanging eaves, a rectangular composition, two porches and truncated obelisk porch columns.
This bungalow is particulazly notable because it is built with cast concrete blocks, which are used
(` ', 119 Pine Street
~ '' Suite 207
Seattle, WA 98101
~._ (206)343-0226
~ FAX (206) 343-0249
Since ~ 97~
Researching the vast for Todays Solutions
