Comments and Responses-Letter 10
lOZ--Comment acknowledged
10.3-The difficulty of relocating
the University of Oregon
Bookstore processing
center/warehouse is noted.
10.4-Although it is
acknowledged that selection of the
Broadway site would result in
serious difficulties for the
bookstore, these difficulties would
not result in a change to the
population of Eugene, Springfield,
or Lane County. The fact that the
University of Oregon Bookstore
has future plans to expand the
processing center/warehouse is
noted.
10.d
(Letter 10)
10.1 that our organiretion plsys an important and fundamemai role to the suxessfui trperarion
cent!. of the 1lniversiry of Oregon.
10.2 [n 1984 we purchased the property and building located u 462 East 8th Avenue and
moved virtually all xceiving of product from our main store located, u 895 Eau 13^
Avenue, to the Eat 8° location, The acquisition of the 462 East 8th Avenue property
allowed ru to expand our retail apace to meet the growing needs of the University of
Oregon trommunity a well u add much needed services. This move eliminated much
congestion and pollution as delivery tnrcka no longer caikd on our campw atone. Prior to
the move, loge fmight trucks held up traffic on t3• Avenue and Kincaid Stmt a they
tried to negotiate pulling into the alley. This held up auto traffic and created a t~gativo
environmental impset around the west campus area.
10.3 We have made. a preliminary analysis of available warehouse space in our taco and hove
not come up with anything suitable. Ilrc closest property appears to be in the Glenwood
race whkh is two m three miles away. Our cumnt processing center is located just 6110
of ante mik away from our stores (main and Duck Shop at Autzen Stadium) and ffiree ro
four minutes in ttnvel time. If we are forced to all our Processing Center property we
most likely will have to bring back in-store the receiving of books and twmptuers.
Thu acdoa will negatively impact the local busineu district and university by bringing
nrrmeroua delivery trucks onto l3° Avenue and Kincaid Smtet. This time the impact will
also affect Lane Trurait District, which ha swo major bus stops in the immdtiate area of
the Bookstore.
Specific to psge 145 of the Draft Environmental Impost Statement there is one obvious
omiaion regarding the hu tKflvc largest county employers and that is the University of
Oregon. tlrtlrermorc. on the aarra page it is srnted, "the proposed coutdtoute project
would have nolong-term adverse impact on the popWation of Eugene, Springfield, or
Lana County." We atmn¢Iv d;..e..} wi h th;. an¢tvsia ificlo Eu¢ene because the
t _ '>,i+rniq~ eo~rr Meeirv The University of Orogon needs and deserves a world sloes
colkgiau teW ier and our strategic plan speaks to that goal. To aceampiith this,
however, our plan includes an expanded processing Center at its present locmioa. Any
other location will greatly compromise our ability to meet the present and future nods of
the Utuversiry of Oregon.
Thank you for the opportunity to respond a the Dmft Environmental impact Statement.
We hope our response is helpful in better understanding the adverse impact siting the new
_'
Final EJS 184 New Federal Courthouse
