;r J
;;
r

E U G E I~I E
_~ u, )~,.
orts F-field Maintenance
Eugene
pace
City of Eugene Parks and Open Space Maintenance is responsible for the care of a variety of
amenities, including sports fields. Maintenance staff efficiently maintains quality amenities
and strives to use progressive maintenance techniques. Below is a description of typical
maintenance procedures on sports fields.
Watering,:
Computer controlled irrigations systems are used to minimize water usage. Evapotranspiration rates are
monitored by a weather station and this information is used to determine the appropriate amount with
which to irrigate. Only water lost through evapotranspiration is replaced. The City joined EWEB's water-wise
program which uses signs to inform citizens about efficient water use.
Mowing:
Mowing occurs one to two times per
week throughout the active growing
season (March- October) and as needed
in winter.
Fertilizing:
Fertilizing usually take place three times
per year (late May, late August, and mid
November). The fertilizer has a 25-5-10
ratio with 40% slow release at a rate of 1
Ib. of nitrogen per 1000 sq. ft.
Painting:
Out-of-play areas are lined with anon-
toxic,latex paint formulated for sport
field use. This occurs once a week in
April-July and September-November.
Herbicides:
Herbicides are not used on grassy areas of sports fields. Weed control for softball infields is done with
mechanized equipment or by hand. Occasionally, dirt areas along back stops and fence lines of softball fields
need chemical weed suppression. Very small amounts of the least toxic alternative, Round-Up, is used in
these situations. This only occurs at Shasta and Ascot fields.
Other:
Aeration, overseeding, and topdressing (sanding) are done when fields are worn and/or compacted from
overuse usually once or twice a year.
