1. Introduction
Amazon Park is a beloved 90-acre community park in South Eugene. The Parks,
Recreation, and Open Space Comprehensive Plan defines a community park as a large
park that provides active and passive recreational opportunities for all City residents, see
Community Park Fact Sheet in appendix. Community parks accommodate large group
activities and typically include internal parking areas and sport fields. Some of the
benefits a community park provides include: a variety of accessible recreation
opportunities for all age groups; environmental education opportunities; opportunities
for community social and cultural activities and positive community identity.
Amazon Park is bordered by 30~ Avenue on the south and Hilyard Street on the east.
The park extends north across 24~ Avenue to include the softball field complex and sand
volleyball courts just south of South Eugene High School. It also extends westerly
beyond the bounds of Amazon Parkway to include the Community Gardens along 28t1i
Avenue and walking paths south of 30~ Avenue.
The park is situated in a larger context of open space including the creek area in between
East and West Amazon to the south, Tugman Park, the adjoining school properties of
South Eugene High School, and Roosevelt Middle School, and Amazon Creek as it
continues north. Some recreation amenities which are often thought of as park facilities
are not actually on park property. These amenities include the tennis courts and fields
located at Roosevelt Middle School.
Amazon Park Concept Design Page 3 February 15, 2005
Amazon from above, looking east.
