mazon Park <br />workshop #1 <br />report <br />Sept. 25, 2003 <br />Introductions and Workshop Overview <br />Carolyn Weiss, Landscape Architect with the City of Eugene Parks and Open Space Division, <br />introduced herself as the project manager for Amazon Park improvements and welcomed <br />everyone to the first workshop. Approximately 60 community members were present. <br />Goal and Objectives of Public Process <br />The purpose of the workshop and the. planning process were explained through the following <br />goal and objectives: <br />^ Goal: Conduct an efficient, inclusive and open discussion regarding Amazon Park, which <br />helps direct near-term improvements and provides direction for the future. <br />^ Objective 1: Identify priority improvements to help determine how to spend the available <br />bond measure funds. <br />^ Objective 2: Identify what aspects of the existing Master Plan remain relevant while updating <br />and recording new trends in public opinion and expertise. Amend the existing Master Plan <br />as needed. <br />Existing Conditions <br />Amazon Park is the most popular park in South Eugene. It encompasses 96 acres in a densely <br />residential area. It accommodates a wide range of activities and interests from skateboarding <br />and organized sports, to a dog park to natural open areas. Aland use diagram was presented <br />which identified the context of the park, as well as the different categories. of uses of the park. <br />The land use categories include: active recreation, parking, buildings, wooded, wetlands/ open <br />water, and endangered species. Existing automobile, bicycle, and pedestrian circulation routes <br />were discussed and the following observations made: . <br />^ North/south movement through the park is strong because of the bike path that parallels <br />Amazon Creek. <br />^ East/west movement is restricted to the two creek crossing points at 24'" Avenue, and 29th <br />Avenue. <br />^ East/west movement is further restricted due to the high volume of traffic on bordering <br />streets, Amazon Parkway and Hilyard Street. <br />Existing Master Plan (1994) <br />A master plan process for Amazon Park was undertaken in 1994. The plan that was developed <br />as a result of that process was presented. Portions of the 1994 plan have been implemented <br />while others have not. Major components of the master plan include: <br />^ Parking area/ LTD transfer station (constructed) <br />^ Restrooms (not constructed) <br />^ Wetland creation (constructed) <br />^ Rebuild/reorient existing Century ball diamond (not constructed) <br />^ New sportsfield (not constructed) <br />^ Amazon Creek wetland and riparian zone enhancements (not constructed) <br />^ Bridges (2) over the creek (not constructed) <br />Amazon Park 11/25/03 <br />Workshop 1 Report Page 1 <br />
