Welcome!
2007 is here and it is time to celebrate our past achievements and lor~lc ahead to
the future. Eugeneans have every reason to be proud. We can all shaec~ er~;dit
for helping to define our community as a healthy place that values diversity,
takes care of those in need, and works hard to find a good balance between
growth and sustainability. The choices we have made reflect our desire to both
preserve our cultural and natural heritage and advance our vision for the future,
What will Eugene look like in 50 years? Will tomorrow's residents enjoy living in awell-
managed city that cherishes and nurtures its irreplaceable green spaces? Will there be stable
and well-paying jobs, an adequate supply of affordable housing, strong neighborhoods, and a
healthy economy anchored by environmentally responsible industry? The answers to these
questions and many others depend a great deal on how we respond to today's challenges. We
want to be sure we are making the right decisions -decisions that will enhance Eugene's well-
established reputation as one of the country's most livable cities.
Livability means a transparent, inclusive government that listens to every voice. It means
compassionate, comprehensive social services and awell-maintained transportation network
that serves all modes and abilities. It means rich and diverse cultural offerings, plenty of parks
and open spaces, and excellent educational opportunities. It means accessible buildings,
sidewalks and streets and a welcoming, supportive business environment. It means great
neighborhoods, north and south, east and west. Ultimately, livability means ensuring that
Eugene is a safe and wonderful place, full of opportunity for our children.
I look forward to continuing our work together in the coming months. We've made significant
progress toward our goals this year and I am certain that, with your help, our efforts will lead
to great things, both in the shgrt term and for future generations, I am confident that Eugene
will continue to be a state and natlorial leader in livability
In closing, I would like to recognize the hard work of our council, our City employees and the
many volunteers who help provide city services. I wish to thank Councilors David Kelly and
Gary Pape for their years of greet service to our community, Wa havo indeed been fortunate.
I also want to welcome Coundlors Alan Zelenka and Mlke Clark as Choy bogin their tenure. We
have much to do together,
Finally, my heartfelt thanks go to the voters for supporting our parks and open spaces, as well
as our much-loved library. With these votes we are building a community.
Sincerely,
k'~ P~
