I hold masters degrees in Historic Preservation and Community & Regional. Planning
from the University of Oregon. Presently I am Assistant Project Manager/Preservation Specialist for Venen;:ble
Properties in Portland.
On August 14, 2007, I visited the Shaw-Med/Tango Center and Taco Time build'utgs for the purpose of locating and
evaluating any historic fabric remaining from the original buildings on these two sites. This report, summazizes my .
findings, conclusions, and recommendations for the two buildings.
It should be noted that my site visit did not include any investigative demolition, except where a tenant was able to pull
off some flashing on the roof on the Shaw-Med building. My findings are the result of what I could readily see, as well
as clues the remodeled buildings gave as to what might be hidden underneath. -
Shaw-Med/Tango Center Building -198 W Broadway
Built in 1929, this structure originally housed Eugene's public market. As
built; the structure was a fine example of Mission Style architecture, with r
many Spanish Baroque features, including Churrigueresque columns, , >r-
finials, terra cotta friezes, and parapet ornamentation. According to the
City of Eugene Cultural Resource Inventory entry for this building dated
1989, the public market building has been remodeled several times. These _ ~ ~ Ta
remodels substantially altered both the exterior and interior, resulting in the
permanent loss of many of building's character-defining features and the
enclosure of the primary facades behind stucco waits.
Figure 1. It is =
likely that other arched doorways aze concealed beneath the stucco
fagade.
The rhythm of the bays is largely intact -that is, current windows `
and doors are located within the original openings.
i
,
• .According to the tenant, the openings for the transom windows
remain.. However, they are currently concealed, so I was not able
r
to observe this m self. `
_wl
It is likely the columns at the azched openings remain under the
stucco fagade; however, demolition of the stucco fagade is needed
to confirm this.
• Some interior column capitals aze partially exposed.
• Roof trusses are visible in the attic area; however, these trusses Figure 2.
