Attachment B shows the one-time allocations for ongoing services that will expire in
the next few years.
Work on Council Goals
The new City Council was sworn in on January 5, 2007. At its annual goal-setting retreat in
February, the council reaffirmed the four overarching goals of the organization and six ongoing
strategic goals. The council also added four new strategic goals for the next two years. The list
represents an admirable mix of practical objectives and lofty aspirations. From developing
sustainable plans to fix our city streets and infuse our downtown with new vitality, to
formulating strategies for eliminating homelessness and racism, these priorities, when met, will
help us to become and remain the kind of compassionate, well-managed community we want to
be. Many members of the community are engaged with us in developing two-year action plans
to address these council goals. Funding for the action plans will be identified once they are
approved by the City Council. The 10 strategic goals, including the action plan efforts that the
budget supports in FY07 and FY08, are outlined on the next pages.
The continuing goals are:
Race
Enhance understanding of race issues and improve community relationships.
-The action plan for this council goal focuses on community input and Mayor and City Council
education as a background for action on issues of race. Members of the Community Committee
on Race (CCR) are working to develop recommendations for next steps and will report to the
City Council in May 2007.
No additional funds are proposed in this budget.
Homeless Initiative
Continue to work collaboratively with our community partners to end chronic homelessness in
ten years.
• Blue Ribbon Committee
• Youth
• Women and Children
The FY07 annual budget allocates $150,000 to fund the initiative. During FY07, the funds
were used for homeless prevention, transportation, and day services for homeless people.. On
February 8, 2007, over 1,000 of our community's most vulnerable residents took full, advantage
of the free food, clothing, services, and other resources provided at the first annual Project
Homeless Connect event. The atmosphere was filled with goodwill, appreciation, and, most
notably,. hope. Ending chronic homelessness in this community is one of the City Council's
most ambitious and commendable goals. This overwhelmingly positive event exemplified what
can be done when the pursuit of social equity is an integral part of efforts to achieve long-term
community goals. This spring, the Mayor, with council approval, appointed a committee to
identify permanent and stable funding sources for addressing homelessness and housing issues.
No additional funds are proposed in this budget.
4
