In response to a management review of the International City-County Management
Association and Police Executive Research Forum (ICMA-PERF), the department has
committed to undergo a comprehensive accreditation process. Significant work is expected in
the next two years as the department prepares .for accreditation and performs a complete and
comprehensive policy review. The department has contracted with a professional policy
development firm to utilize their draft policy framework as a basis for policies which will be
developed to meet Eugene's needs.
15. Beginning January 2007, all recruit police officers will be required by state statute to attend
the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) Academy in Salem instead of
the Eugene's successful regional academy. This training change will require a significant
modification in Eugene's recruitment and selection practices because the DPSST academy will
be limited in the number of recruits that they can accept and hiring must be synchronized with
their training schedules. In 2007, the Police Department will develop and implement a new
supplemental training program to enhance the basic training provided at DPSST.
47
