A
ugust 12, 2008
CONTACT: Damon Joyner, Surface Maintenance Supervisor, 541-682-4835
From Public Information Section, 682-5523 or 954-2938
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
' Expanded Pothole Program Hits the Streets in Eugene
i
An expanded pothole repair program hits the streets in Eugene this week. Enhanced
services include abeefed-up "pothole patrol," maintenance overlays on some of the most pothole-
riddled streets around town, and a new online pothole reporting form.
As part of the budget for the current fiscal year, the Eugene City Council in June allocated

~ an additional $1 million for pothole repairs.
"Community members told us over and over again that they want the City to do something
to repair the worst roads and this expanded funding helps respond to that need," said Council
President Chris Pryor.
The additional funds will be used in amulti-pronged approach to repair potholed streets:
• Athree-person crew will be dedicated exclusively to citywide pothole repairs and related
street repairs. This will result in a more proactive approach to addressing potholes and will allow
Public Works to move beyond simply filling hazardous potholes (those that are more than 3 inches
deep). Last year, Public Works crews patched about 4,400 potholes. Through July of this year,
more than 3,700 potholes have been repaired, with the expanded program just starting to ramp up.
• Citizen requests for service will continue to be an important part of the pothole repair
program. To make it easier for people to report potholes, a new online pothole reporting service
has been created at www.eugene-or.gov/pothole.
• Maintenance overlays will be used to provide a holistic and cost-effective treatment on
badly damaged streets. On Wednesday, August 13, Eugene Sand & Gravel, working under
contract to Public Works Maintenance, will apply a maintenance overlay on Arcadia Drive between
Harlow Road and Babcock Lane. Other streets likely to receive 2-inch-thick surface patches in the
near term include portions of Grand View Drive, McMillan Street, Bethel Drive, Central and Spring
boulevards, Buck Street, Bond Lane, Berntzen Road, and Riverview Avenue.
• Rough intersections will be smoothed out where the top asphalt lift has come apart, similar
to the repairs recently done at 18t" Avenue and Patterson Street.
"The pothole' problem affects everyone. This is one important way to invest in our roads
- and make some progress in addressing this community priority," said Mayor Kitty Piercy.
Eugene Public Works • www.eugene-or.gov/pw
858 Pearl Street, Eugene, Oregon 97501 • 541-682-5523 • fax 541-682-6826 • e-mail pwadmin@ci.eugene.or.us
_ _ _ _ _ _
