~ C,-~,,•- ~
~
September 18, 2008
CONTACT: Project Manager Matt Rodrigues, 541-682-6036
From Public Information Section, 682-5523 or 954-2938
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Roosevelt Boulevard to Get Asphalt Overlay Beginning Next Week
Paving repairs on a 2.7-mile-long section of Roosevelt Boulevard are scheduled to begin
September 22. Paving work also is scheduled next week on Berntzen Road in west Eugene and
Bond Lane in north Eugene.
Eugene Sand Construction submitted the apparent low bid of $1.7 million to mill and overlay
Roosevelt Boulevard from Chambers Street to Beltline Highway. The work will be done in two
phases: the first phase, from Chambers Street to Seneca Road, is scheduled to be substantially
completed bymid-November; the second phase, from Seneca Road to Beltline Highway, will be
done next spring or early summer, as weather permits.
In both phases deteriorated pavement will be removed with roto-milling equipment and then
..the roadway will be repaved. In sections where pavement has completely failed, the pavemenf and
base rock section will be removed and replaced. This will add many years of life to Roosevelt
Boulevard, which is a fully improved city street.
In general, working hours for the project are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Milling
and paving between Lassen Street and Seneca Road will be done at night from 7 p.m. to 7 a:m.
The decision to move ahead on the Roosevelt Boulevard followed a bid opening on August
28 that brought favorable bid results. Staff from the Public Works Engineering Division were
concerned that rapidly escalating asphalt costs might cause the project to be postponed; however,
the bids that came in were actually lower than expected. Funding for the project comes from a
combination of local gas tax revenue and federal funds.
Unlike the extensive repairs on Roosevelt Boulevard, the work on Bertnzen Road and Bond
Lane will consist mostly of maintenance overlays. Egge Sand & Gravel will apply thin coats of
asphalt designed to cover numerous potholes on these unimproved roadways. Funding for
maintenance overlays comes from a $1 million allocation of City general funds approved by the
Eugene City Council for enhanced pothole repairs.
For more information on these and other area road projects, visit the City of Eugene's traffic
web site at www.eugene-or.gov/traffic or call the metro roadwork hotline at 984-8484.
Eugene Public Works • www.eugene-or.gov/pw
858 Pearl Street, Eugene; Oregon 97501 • 541-682-5523 • fax 541-682-6826 • e-mail pwadmin@ci.eugene.or.us

_
