The
program is available in both written form and on the Intranet, which any employee can access.

i
The Career Development Program is primarily employee driven. A detailed, step-by-step handbook is
available for employees to work through the process of completing a plan. Supervisors are trained to
counsel and guide employees through the process. Employees can formalize a written Career Development
Plan which is signed by their supervisor and kept in the Human Resources Division. Work time is made
available for employees to conduct informational interviews with supervisors and employees in a desired
career area. Career Development opportunities are created as often as feasible and posted for employee's
consideration.
Ideally, supervisors and employees review their career goals and/or Career Development Plans when
conducting annual performance evaluations. Goals should be set and provisions negotiated which would
assist employees in achieving their career development goals.
HR staff and our employee assistance program (Direction for Employee Assistance) staff are available for
individual career coaching and counseling. This includes support in resume writing and interviewing skills.
X2004 American Public Works Association Version 5.0
26
