City of Eugene
Human Resource and Risk Services Policies
involuntary demotions generally do not serve a new probationary period. Every
proposed demotion should be discussed with HRRS to evaluate the impact on
an employee's probationary period.
Employees who are still within their initial probationary period at the time of
demotion, may be placed at a step lower than specified above. If the demotion
happens during an employee's probationary period in a new position and the
demotion is to the employee's former classification, the employee will return to
the former step at that pay range and the former merit review date will be
re-instated. If the employee's demotion is to a new classification, the new step
will be determined based upon an evaluation of the employee's skill level. Such a
placement needs to be coordinated with HRRS.
Labor Agreements may differ from this policy. The contract language prevails.
SEE: Section 3-923 and the Supervisor's Guide

Human Resource and Risk Services Revision: 06/16/02
