i
j December 15, 2008
i
CONTACT: Eric Johnson, Eugene Public Works Maintenance,. 541-682-4800
Eric Jones, Public Works Public Affairs. Manager, 541-954-2938
From Public Information Section, 682-5523 or 682-4800
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Snow/Ice Emergency Parking Ban Goes Into Effect in Eugene
The City of Eugene has declared an ice/snow emergency, effective immediately. The
emergency declaration means all vehicles must be removed immediately from designated snow
emergency routes.
Eugene Public Works Maintenance Director Jeff Lankston declared the emergency due
j to today's snow fall and expectation of continued freezing conditions. The city's ice/snow
ordinance prohibits parking along streets designated as snow emergency routes while a
snow/ice emergency is in effect. Typically, emergency routes are collectors, arterials, and bus
routes.
The ordinance gives the City the authority to tow vehicles parked or stranded along
emergency routes. By banning parking; the City is able to ensure that emergency vehicles,
r
buses, and other essential traffic can move safely around town, and that parked and stalled
vehicles do not hamper snow removal operation.
The parking ban will remain in effect until further notification. Listen to local radio and
television stations for regular updates. If you have questions about which streets are
emergency routes and subject to the parking ban, call 682-4800, or on the Internet at
www.eugene-or.gov/pw.
As of 6 a.m. today, more than 4 inches of snow had accumulated in many area of
Eugene, and continued freezing conditions are forecast for the next several days. Public Works
plows and sanding trucks are concentrating on main thoroughfares. The Public Works
Emergency Communications Center was opened early this morning and likely will remain open
until conditions have improved.
Public Works:.
