December 18, 2008
I
i
CONTACT: Eric Johnson, Surface Operations Manager, 541-682-4904

• Damon Joyner, Surface Maintenance Supervisor, 541-682-4835
From Public Information Section, 682-5523 or 954-2938
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
i
Eugene Lifts Emergency Parking Ban, For Now
I
{
The ice-snow parking ban in Eugene has been lifted, for now.
~ Eugene Public Works Maintenance shut down its emergency command center and
I
discontinued the prohibition on parking on priority ice-snow routes at 6 a.m. today. At least one
plow-and-sander truck remains in duty, responding to spot problem areas in the higher elevations
of the south hills. Meanwhile, crews that had been working on ice and snow removal have been
reassigned to leaf collection in southwest Eugene.
Public Works staff is monitoring weather conditions and will reinstate the parking ban if ice
or more than an inch of snow accumulates on city streets. The National Weather Service is
predicting abundant moisture and subfreezing low-level temperatures with the possibility of more
snow and ice in Eugene by the weekend.
Property owners are reminded that it is their responsibility to keep sidewalks safe by
removing snow, ice and wet leaves. Public Works recommends that property owners clear their
walkways now before freezing conditions return.
Public Works opened its Emergency Command Center at the Roosevelt Yard early Monday
morning and began around-the-clock operations to plow streets and apply sand and liquid deicers.
Over the past three days, crews logged more than 2,500 miles during snow operations, and more
than 900 cubic yards of sand was put down to provide traction on priority ice-snow routes. Once
the current series of storms is over, Maintenance crews will sweep the streets to pick up leftover
sand.
The City of Eugene manages ice-snow operations on a priority route basis. Approximately
half of the city's 540-mile street network is designed as priority one, two or three ice-snow routes.
For details on where priority ice-snow routes are located and for information on drivers'
responsibilities if an ice-snow emergency is declared, visit www.eugene-or..
oq v/pw or call Eugene
Public Works Maintenance at 682-4800.
Eugene Public Works • www.eugene-or.gov/pw
858 Pearl Street, Eugene, Oregon 97501 • 541-682-5523 • fax 541-682-6826 • e-mail pwadmin@ci.eugene.or.us
_ _ _ _
