6. Kurt Corey (City) -The City of Eugene Public Works Department is very thankful to have had

this opportunity to work with the Portland District Corps of Engineers over the last several yeazs.
We appreciate the perseverance of all partners to successfully plan and execute such a large and
worthy project. The road was not always a smooth one: I understand there were times when the
project planning team ran into roadblocks and bazriers that required tremendous coordination and
communication. Lands were purchased by BLM and the City, policies vrr~~e~e' examined and re-
examined to find ways to meet the mutually beneficial goal of restoring these 400 acres of
floodplain and wet prairies. The planning and prep work came to close as the first truck load of
levee material was removed in the summer of 1999. Staff from all agencies worked diligently
over the next two summers to restore the surrounding wet prairies. We added recreation features
to the project which complimented the City's Fern Ridge bike path extension which is now
getting underway. ,
Through all of this, Project Manager Matt Rea and the project team from the Corps of Engineers
did an excellent job working with us to help make all of this a reality. We would like to thank
Matt and the rest of his team, including Geotechnical engineer Doug Putman, Wildlife Biologist
Geoff Dorsey, Landscape Architects Gail Lovell & Chris Ferguson, staff from the Realty Office,
Office of Counsel, Office of Contracting, Economic Analysis and Construction Management
staff for their work over the years to see this through. We owe them our thanks. (Matt steps
forward to accept the awazd and there is applause)
In addition to the good work of the Corps and those involved in the planning phases, we would
like to recognize the Forest Road Maintenance Crew and technical staff from BLM for their
Outstanding contribution to the project. I have been told that these folks went beyond the call of
duty in the summer of 2000 and' 2001 to successfully implement the earthwork restoration
components of this project. Under the lead of Don Kokko & Mike Stahl these staff handled a
myriad of duties and oversaw what may have been the lazgest earthwork project in the Eugene /
Springfield area this summer. We aze grateful for the long hours and hazd work and we hope to
have many more opportunities to work together in the future. (Don or Mike steps forward to
accept the award and there is applause)
7. Councilors Nancy Nathanson & Pat Farr
8.
