i
~ City of Eugene
URBAN FORESTRY OFFICE
Tree Appraisal Worksheet

~ Based on
Guide for Plant Appraisal, 9~' edition, Council of Tree & Landscape Appraisers, 2000
Case# Property. 2495 Bailey Hill Rd. Date 10/10/2005
Appra sers: John Luther (PNW 1089A)• Matt Rivers (PlyW 0682A1; Mark Snyder (MA 0002AM)
Field bservations: This tree is being appraised at the request of the Urban
Forest r, who was contacted about the possible development of a

l
subdiv'sion located adjacent to this tree.

~I

' 1. S ecies: Quercus garryana, Oregon white oak
j 2. C ndition:
(Tot l subtotal points arv~aed by 32 and multiplied by 100 equals condition
rating.)
Structure ealth

' 1. 3 >Roots:
• The trunk of this tree sits atop a bank that parallels Bailey Hill Road and is
five feet higher than the roadbed. There are no apparent problems on the
i i eastern half of the root system, which is the high side, and which extends in
a plane from the middle of the base of the tree. There are, however,
"extreme" category structure problems on the western side, where the other
half of the tree's root system lies under a roadside storm water drainage
ditch and likely extends beneath the roadbed. The ditch undergoes periodic
maintenance for conveyance; damage to the trunk and root system
(probably from maintenance equipment or from accidental vehicular
collision) is apparent from the exposed face of the bank. Engineering
drawings for a road widening project in 1982 show that the new excavation
work was done on the west side of Bailey Hill Road, opposite this tree. The

' uniformly vigorous condition of the crown of the tree does not suggest the
presence of decline or significant impact to root health, despite the

I I structural damage on the exposed bank face.
2 3 >Trunk:

I • There is a 12-inch by 12-inch wound on the western side of the trunk at 12
inches above ground level. A '/Z-inch wire cable eyelet is embedded in the
j western side of the trunk at ground level. Wounds and embedded fence

~ ~ wire were also observed on this side of the trunk.
3 3 >Scaffo[d Branches:
• Apiece of wire 7 feet long is embedded on the northern side of the tree at
seven feet above ground level.

' 3 >Smaller Branches and Twigs: Minor problems

I
3_ >Foliage: Minor problems
6 + 15 = 21 / 32 X 100 = 65%
