i

June 6, 2000
CONTACT: aria Spangler, Vegetation Manager, 682-4821 .
From Public I formation Section, 682-5523
FOR IMME IATE RELEASE
I'~Y TO BEGIN ENFORCING VEGETATION ORDINANCE
Prope o'uvners, take note! The mild winter and the early arrival of spring mean that grass
and other vege ation are growing faster than normal. In many cases, this means they're growing out
of control. Pro erty owners are responsible for keeping grass and weeds below 10 inches in height
and for remov ng blackberry vines or other obnoxious vegetation that extends into a public way,
impairs motori ts' visibility, or crosses a property line. Beginning June 15, the City of Eugene will
take action to ensure that overgrown grass, weeds, and other forms of obnoxious vegetation are
controlled on acant lots.
Overgr wzi vegetation can create fire and traffic hazards and constitutes a violation of the
nuisance ordin ces in the City code. On undeveloped properties, the City may remove obnoxious
vegetation bet een June 15 and September 30 without further notice. Vegetation that blocks
visibility for otorists must be removed immediately, regardless of the season. On developed
properties, owr;ters must correct nuisances year-round. Nuisance conditions include trees and shrubs

that obstructs eets, alleys, and sidewalks; visual obstruction at street and alley intersections; and
blackberries e croaching over property lines. If a violation is found on developed property, the
owner is notifi d by letter and has 10 days to correct the problem.
If a pr perty owner does not correct a violation, the City will hire a contractor to mow or
remove the n isance, billing the property owner for the cost of the work. The City's minimum
mowing charg is $166, and in some cases, the cost may be higher, especially if much work must
be done by ha d.
For mire information, call 682-4800, or visit the City of Eugene home page at
www.ci.eugen~ .onus.
~ -
ubNic Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401
Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX: (541) 682-6826 • www.ci.eugene.or.us
