~ ~ i ~ i
r r - ~ -
May 11, 2000
CONTACT: Tony Jobanek, Maintenance Supervisor, 682-4800
From Public I formation Section, 682-5523
FOR IMME IATE RELEASE
UO FRA E~2NITIES AND SORORITIES TO CLEAN UP LOWER MILL RACE
Fratern ty and sorority members at the University of Oregon will join the City's Public
Works staff fo a spring cleanup of the lower mill race on Saturday, May 13.
The U students have volunteered up to remove debris from the open portion of the mill

race between lder and Ferry streets. The Public Works Department began draining the channel

below the mill ~ond early Thursday so the water level would be low enough to allow Saturday's
cleanup activities. The mill pond will not be affected by the drawdown, and the lower mill race
I

will be refilled ~s soon as the cleanup is completed. Public Works also will provide equipment
for the cleanup, and haul off debris gathered by volunteers.
The cleanup runs from noon to 4 p.m. The mill race cleanup is a valuable community
service because the mill race flows directly into the Willamette River, and any debris thrown into

the millrace ca wiind up polluting the river. Volunteers are also welcome to enhance water
quality at other ocations around the city. For mare information about stream cleanup
opportunities, c 11 the Eugene Stream Team at 682-4850.
Pu lic Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401
Phone: (54i) 682-5262 • FAX: (541) 682-6826 • www.ci.eugene.or.us
