The
public is invit d to help plant 12 aspen trees in the grassy median in the overflow parking lot east
of the park en ance.
At the ceremony, the mayor will issue a proclamation to remind citizens of the importance
of Eugene's ut±ban forest. Arbor Week is an annual event, and this year marks the 21st time that
Eugene has bejen recognized as a "Tree City USA" by The National Arbor Day Foundation.
There~re more than 100,000 trees on public lands in Eugene, and in the last year, nearly
1,300 hundred public trees were planted through a variety of programs. Most of these trees were
planted by volunteers in the NeighborWoods program, many were planted by the city's tree crew,
and many oth rs were planted through the city's New Development Street Tree Program.
Eugen 's urban forest helps provide our city with clean air, shade, and a relaxing
environment i which to live. Trees are beneficial in less obvious ways as well. In his
proclamation,~'~Mayor Torrey says, "Trees can reduce the erosion of precious topsoil; they can cut
heating and cooling costs; they can moderate temperatures; produce oxygen; and provide habitat
for wildlife. Frees not only beautify the community, they increase the value of our homes and
enhance the economic vitality of Eugene's business areas."
Public Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Peart Street • Eugene, OR 97401
Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX: (541) 682-6826 • www.ci.eugene.or.us

I
