f <br /> For ~mmediate Release - For Information Call: <br /> Kiirsten Jones 485-3991 <br /> 1% for Art Projects Selected for Amazon Pool <br /> Local artists, Peter Hefzer of Pleasant Hill and David Thompson of Eugene, have been selected <br /> to provide pu lic art for the Amazon Pool renovation project. The project's Art Selection <br /> Committee rriet last week to review 29 proposals received from artists all over the country and <br /> selected He~er and Thompson based on the quality of their work and the appropriateness of <br /> their propos Is to the project. <br /> David Thomson will create three aluminum banner ribbons in festive colors at the newly- <br /> designed enfrance to the pool. The floating banners will be designed as windvanes on top of <br /> tapered pole, 27 - 32 feet in height, turning with the slightest breeze. The banners will mark the <br /> entrance and will be visible from Hilyard Street and the surrounding Amazon Park area. <br /> Thompson will receive $9,000 for this commission. Thompson and artist Betsy Wolfston are <br /> known to ma y as the creators of the four markers at the intersection of Broadway and <br /> WiAamette in downtown Eugene. Thompson also has created metal artwork for the Lane Transit <br /> District Admi istration building, the Excelsior Cafe, The University of Oregon Law School, and <br /> several private residences. <br /> Sculptor Pet r Hefzer is well known locally for the bronze animals in the children's play area on <br /> Broadway, tt~e bronze dancers in the Hult Center Lobby, the Kesey memorial on top of Mt. <br /> Pisgah, and bronze sculptures at Spencer View Student Housing complex, Lane County <br /> Housing Authority, and Jacob's Lane Housing Development. Other bronze work can be seen at <br /> Tualatin Corrimons, Shevlin Riverfront Park in Bend, Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath <br /> Falls, the Oregon Zoo and Washington Park Zoo in Portland, the State Capitol grounds in <br /> Salem, and tie Corvallis PubNc Library. Hefzer will create three bronze animals in the children's <br /> area of Ammon Pool, two of which will complement a planned fountain area. Hefzer will receive <br /> $18,000 for this commission. <br /> Members of the Art Selection Committee were artists Jane Stromberg, Terry Way, and Lynn <br /> Wiley; Comm nity representative,Tim Smith; Dave Guadagni representing RobertsoNSherwood <br /> architects; S eve Loges from City of Eugene Facilities; and Juliana Larson representing City pf <br /> Eugene Libr ry, Recreation, and Cultural Services. <br /> The renovati n of Amazon Pool was approved by Eugene voters as part of a Parks and Open <br /> Space bond easure election. This multi-million dollar project includes the Construction of two <br /> new pools a d renovation of an existing beginner pool, construction of new decks and shade <br /> structures, a larged turf and sand play area, and expansion and renovation of the bathhouse. <br /> Construction is expected to begin August 2000 and completion is expected for July 2001. <br /> Eugene's ordinance for Art in Public Places was enacted in 1982 and allocates 1 % of all city <br /> constructionprojects over $50,000 for art at those sites. Permanent artwork at the airport, the <br /> <br /> downtown m~ll, Pearl Street Garage, Broadway Place, the Fire Station on Willakenzie and the <br /> Public Safe ,Training Center at 2nd and Chambers exist because of this ordinance. <br /> <br />
