ICI
~ i , _ i
anuary 10, 200
ONTACT: G Ludeke, Traffic Engineer, 682-5237
rom Public In rmation Section, 682-5523
OR IMMEDI TE RELEASE
NEW SPEE~ WARNING FLASHER INSTALLED AT `S' CURVE ON GARFIELD
An expe imental speed warning sign with flashers, designed and installed by the Eugene
ublic Works partment, is now in operation at the "S" curve on Garfield Street just north of
13th Avenue in t~e Westmoreland housing complex.
Southbound motorists approaching the intersection of Garfield and 14th Avenue will see a
sign warning of~ a curve ahead with a 25 MPH speed advisory. Bracketing the sign are four
yellow flashers hat are activated when special sensors detect a vehicle approaching the
intersection at unsafe speed. Otherwise the flashers remain dark.
The trim device was installed in response to citizen concerns that speeding motorists may
fail to negotiate the relatively tight curve and cause serious personal injury and property damage
to residences o 14th Avenue. The sharpness of the curve also reduces the distance that motorists
approaching th~ curve can see bicyclists and pedestrians who may be in the roadway.
I
The dev ce, installed by the City's traffic signal crew at a cost of approximately $10,000,
is similar to on installed early last year on West 18th Avenue near Josh Street. Speed studies
conducted by t e Transportation Division at the 18th Avenue site indicate that most speeding
motorists react to the flashing warning and reduce their speed before entering the curve.

~ # # #
'Public Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401
Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX: (541) 682-6826 • www.ci.eugene.or.us
-
