Peter DeFazio (D-Springfield) announced today that the Eugene <br /> Airport wil r ceive a federal grant of $2 million for runway area safety improvements and <br /> other airpo t nfrastructure needs. DeFazio, a senior member of the House Aviation <br /> Subcommit~e ,helped secure the funding. <br /> "In¢re sed funding far the airport upgrades is necessary to imprc~~e safety and enhance <br /> service to ~u ens" DeFazio said. "This funding will allow the airppor[ to upgrade the safety of <br /> its runway sy tem and make room for future airfield improvements. The airport is the gateway <br /> to our cotr>ttn pity and helps drive our economy. We need to preserve and enhance this asset." <br /> Th~ nding announced today will be used to improve runway safety areas including the <br /> realignme t f Green Hill Road, install guidance signs, construct a serti~ice road and acquire <br /> passenger Iif devices for persons with disabilities. The funding will be released to the airport <br /> later this a 'k. <br /> Ea li r this year, Congress approved legislation, "AIR-2I," ir.:r~asing fonds for <br /> airports nAti nwide. DeFazio was part of the negotiating team on the legislation and was <br /> active in the ebate over airport funding. Under the legislation, begirnng next year, Eugene's <br /> airport w"~11 ive an entitlement grant, based on the number of flights, of $2,726,474 <br /> annually, do ble the current allotment of $1,262,237 annually. The legislation also included <br /> funds for di5 retianary grants, awarded on a competitive basis, with saY~ty improvements <br /> given the hi hest priority. The funding released today is a discretionar}~ grant and is in <br /> addition a annual entitlement. <br /> i <br /> A~R 1 is a three-year bill that will increase aviation investment by $10 billion aver <br /> current leve s, with the lion's share of the funding going to radar modernization and <br /> much-nude airport construction projects.
